Monitor Pages for Changes in Chrome

Sometimes keeping track of website pages can be a pain. Maybe you want to monitor a certain section of a webpage, such as the price of an item on Amazon. Page Monitor for Google Chrome lets you do exactly that, and does so intelligently.

Using this extension you get a lot of control over any page. You can specify the interval you want it monitored at, which parts of the page you want tracked, and much more. It also ignores things like code changes so that you’re not frequently getting notified for things that don’t matter.

Here’s a rundown of the features:

  • Monitor any number of pages for changes
  • Add pages with two clicks
  • Visually select parts of a page to track
  • Smart comparison system that ignores ads and code changes
  • Highlighting of changes that happened to a page since the last check
  • Set separate check interval for each page
  • Set a sound alert when a page change is detected
  • Custom sound alerts
  • Desktop notifications
  • Import and export the monitored pages list

Remove GPS and EXIF Data From Photos

Before posting or sharing photos you might like the piece of mind knowing that there isn’t any identifiable information stored in the metadata of your images. For example, if you’ve taken a photo using your cellphone there is a good chance that the image was also tagged with the GPS location where it was shot.

The free FileMind QuickFix tool removes all GPS location data, EXIF tags (stores date/time the photo was taken, camera type, and more), Iptc and XMP tags (stores descriptive metadata such as copyright). It will also chop out any embedded previews that are saved in the image.

This is a pretty nice tool since it only takes a single click to remove the data, and the interface is about as simple as it gets. If you’re worried about the “hidden” data stored in your images I highly recommend downloading this app.

Some Alternative (and Funny) Lorem Ipsum Generators

I’m sure most of us have used a Lorem Ipsum generator for some filler text at one point or another. If you want to spice things up a little bit we have a few alternative text generators that will throw a little something different into your projects.

File Comparison Utility That Can Show Only Differences

compare-text-files-differences-only

When I’ve had to compare two files in the past I’ve always used the free WinMerge. There is no arguing that this is an awesome free app, but there is one feature it has always lacked that the developers say they won’t add. That feature is a way to view only the lines that are different between two text files. Here is what the WinMerge FAQs say:

Can I hide similar lines in a file comparison, so that only different lines are visible?
No, you can’t. Many users have requested this feature but we don’t have any plans to implement it. We don’t believe it would really improve usability.

There is another free app called DiffMerge that does have this feature though. The two documents that I’m comparing in the screenshot above with DiffMerge are 50 lines in total, but only the different lines are shown.

One thing to note is that the option to view only the differences will be disabled until you switch to the bottom tab labeled Referenced View. After you do that you should be able to switch to the Differences Only view.

I really wish that WinMerge had this feature, but at least there is a free alternative available that can do it. And here are some of the other features that DiffMerge offers:

  • Graphically shows the changes between two files. Includes intra-line highlighting and full support for editing.
  • Graphically shows the changes between 3 files. Allows automatic merging (when safe to do so) and full control over editing the resulting file.
  • Performs a side-by-side comparison of 2 folders, showing which files are only present in one file or the other, as well as file pairs which are identical or different.
  • Windows Explorer Integration – Right-click on any two files in Windows Explorer to diff them immediately.
  • Rulesets and options provide for customized appearance and behavior.
  • Identical feature set on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

What sets Kamui’s cosplay apart from the other World of Warcraft and Diablo costumes out there is that she spends countless hours perfecting them, right down to the last detail, and the example above proves it.

Fake Apple Store in China Fools Own Employees

fake_apple_store1

What if you thought you worked for Apple, but you really didn’t? That’s exactly what the staff at this fake Apple store in the southwestern Chinese city of Kunming believe. I mean who wouldn’t? They’ve reproduced all the branding elements, signage and even those signature Apple employee t-shirts! I’m actually impressed to say the least, at the level of copycat detail. Now the question is how long it’ll take before the real Apple to shuts them down.

Facebook unveiled two new features today, Skype-powered video calls and group chats. Facebook software engineer Philip Su says that the “video calling feature would be built into Facebook for every user over the next few weeks, but users looking to start today can do so via the software update download.”

“Multi-person chat,” as Su called it in his post, has been one of Facebook’s most requested features. “Now when your friends can’t figure out what movie to see, you can just add them to a chat and decide together,” Su said. “To include more friends in your conversation, simply select Add Friends to Chat.”
