BattlePaint is an addictive geometric shooter game

In BattlePaint, you play a cube. In fact, you’re not even a cube — just a square. But boy, are you fast! And you can shoot in all directions. That’s important, because there are baddies coming in from all over the place.

The “baddies” are swarms of other squares, in all sorts of pretty colors. They track you all over the screen, and you run around very quickly and just shoot, shoot, and shoot some more. If that doesn’t sound very emotionally deep, it’s because it isn’t. But it’s fun!

After you shoot a baddy, it splashes paint as it disappears. You need to skate across this blob of paint and “eat it up” to get points. This game is fast. It clocked in at around 60-70 FPS on my system, and was loads of fun to play. It does tend to insult you when you die, though, but don’t be offended — I don’t think it’s personal.

What Color is a beautiful, minimalist way to convert numbers to colors

What Color, here demonstrated with the beautiful Lemon Bee color theme, is a very simple Web utility: You punch in the URL (whatcolor.heroku.com), add a slash, and then put in the HEX codes of whatever colors you’d like to see.

The tool accepts short notation, such as “cdc”, or extended notation, such as “ccddcc”. You can also just append the word “random” to the URL, and get a colorful surprise.

There are a couple of other tricks: You can prefix the URL with /a/ to get analogous colors (such as http://whatcolor.heroku.com/a/b03), or /c/ for complementary colors. And if you add a number at the end, you can control how many colors show up in the palette – here’s a 15-color palette produced with a single, simple URL.

CloudMagic searches your Gmail faster than Google can

CloudMagic is a Google Chrome and Firefox extension which indexes your email locally on your computer, and provides ridiculously fast results when you search. The extension provides a CloudMagic search field right in Gmail with a shortcut key of Ctrl-/ (rather than just / for Gmail’s regular search field). It features search-as-you-type that seems to react instantly to your keystrokes, and uses many of the same search operators that Gmail already uses, so you don’t need to re-learn how to search.

From a privacy standpoint, CloudMagic creates the index locally on your machine, so there’s no risk of someone snooping through your messages. It also stores your password locally, much like a regular email client does.

Dropbox offers a free 250MB for completing a quick tutorial

If you’re a Dropbox user — and we think you probably should be — you can get an extra 250MB added to your account by completing a tutorial that really doesn’t take very long. Just click the Get Started tab on the Dropbox website and follow the instruction. There are 6 steps, and you can do any five of them: just watch a video, send some Dropbox invites to friends, click through a list of Dropbox features … installing Dropbox and putting files into your account count as two steps, and you’ve probably already done them!

The whole thing took me less than 10 minutes, which isn’t a bad investment for 250MB. Dropbox also gives you an extra 250MB for every friend you invite who signs up for an account, so go forth and spread the word to get more storage space.

Well guys, this one’s not for you – sorry! For those of you who did not know WhatIsMyIP.com, it’s a very handy service for figuring out exactly one thing very fast: What is my “real” IP address right now?

This is something you’re going to need every now and then, when troubleshooting network applications, trying remote control applications (although it’s not needed as often these days), configuring certain games, et cetera.

WhatIsMyIP’s advantage does not lie with edgy Web2.0 looks, or snazzy JavaScript. It’s a pretty drab-looking site, and the copy writing is bordering on awful (“Whats My IP Address?”). But it has one big thing going for it: the domain name. It’s really, really easy to remember. And it shows you your IP address in huge font right on top, and does not have any pop-ups, pop-unders, or blink tags.

Nexus One Web Store Closing

Google announced today that it will be closing its Nexus One web store. According to company Vice President Andy Rubin: “while the global adoption of the Android platform has exceeded our expectations, the web store has not…it’s clear that many customers like a hands-on experience before buying a phone.”

Now the company has revealed that “This week we received our last shipment of Nexus One phones. Once we sell these devices, the Nexus One will no longer be available online from Google.”

Sites like Digg and Reddit have been becoming increasing popular because the news and stories that are put in front of the users are those that receive the largest number of votes. Reddit has let users create their own “Reddits” for awhile now, but a site called Slinkset offers some extensive customization while maintaining the fundamental structure of Reddit.

Signing up for Slinkset is incredibly easy. In fact the screenshot you see above is the only information that you have to provide to get a site in working order. Once you create a site, however, you’ll probably want to play around with some customizations. You can do things like change color schemes, fonts, logos, or even provide a custom CSS template:

A simple example of a Slinkset site is this one that has been populated with different ways people use Evernote. On the opposite end of the spectrum is this one that has a more customized design, and actually doesn’t use the voting mechanism at all. Instead it serves as a way to aggregate bad car buying stories.

Beyond the design there are a lot of other settings you can change. You can manage/ban users, use a custom URL (a.k.a. one that is not something.slinkset.com), integrate with your Google Analytics account, and more. One of the nicest features might be that you can insert custom HTML into the sidebar, which means you can include ads or pull content from your own site using an iframe.

It’s finally here! OnLive, the mythical service that almost everyone still believes is impossible — at least in a cost-effective sense — goes live tomorrow. For now, you’ll only be able to sign up in America — and if you sign up now, you might be picked for a ‘limited-availability’ first-year-free offer. After that, it’s $4.95/month — about the price of a single top-tier AAA mega-shooter noobs-need-not-apply game for your PS3 or Xbox… not bad! Check out the list of featured titles that will be available at launch; impressive to say the least.

If this is the first you’ve heard of it, let me give you the basics of the OnLive service. In essence it is ‘cloud-based gaming’ — you simply run a thin client locally, and a horde of OnLive servers stream data to you. Every key press and every mouse movement is sent from your computer and into the cloud — your inputs are processed and the updated ‘video’ is sent back to your computer via the Internet. In theory local hardware requirements are minimal — and ’soon’ you’ll be able to play OnLive on your TV too.

It’s a concept so awesome that many believe it’s impossible to pull off. Still, believe it or not, OnLive is here, with partners AT&T in the USA and BT in the UK. I just wonder, looking at the technological marvels outlined by Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft at E3, if OnLive is too little too late.
