There’s an app called Glogg that I found recently though that also does a greg job of handling large files, and comes equipped with some really nice features.

Glogg has a really strong focus on searching, which is good because a lot of times that’s exactly what you want to do in a log file. It supports regular expression search queries, and the results are show in the bottom pane. Next to the scroll bar you’ll also see blue lines indicated where results were found, and the two black lines represent the area of the log file you are currently viewing.

In the screenshot above you can also see the little blue arrows along the left side of some of the lines. Those appear when you click on the white circles, and kind of serve as a way to bookmark/flag important lines. Once the line is flagged it will appear in the bottom pane just like with search results. That makes it a little easier to compare important lines from the log file.

There is another nice feature tucked away in the Tools menu as well, and that is Filters. With the Filters you can provide multiple search patterns that you want to find in the log file, and for each one you can specify a different background and text color. That way when you’re simply scrolling through the log file the specific lines you are looking for will really stand out.

For example, if you’ve taken a photo using your cellphone there is a good chance that the image was also tagged with the GPS location where it was shot.

The free FileMind QuickFix tool removes all GPS location data, EXIF tags (stores date/time the photo was taken, camera type, and more), Iptc and XMP tags (stores descriptive metadata such as copyright). It will also chop out any embedded previews that are saved in the image.

This is a pretty nice tool since it only takes a single click to remove the data, and the interface is about as simple as it gets. If you’re worried about the “hidden” data stored in your images I highly recommend downloading this app.

I’m sure most of us have used a Lorem Ipsum generator for some filler text at one point or another. If you want to spice things up a little bit we have a few alternative text generators that will throw a little something different into your projects.

Here is a list of generators accompanied by a brief description and a block of sample text:

  • BaconIpsum.com – Adds a little meat to your text

When I’ve had to compare two files in the past I’ve always used the free WinMerge. There is no arguing that this is an awesome free app, but there is one feature it has always lacked that the developers say they won’t add. That feature is a way to view only the lines that are different between two text files. Here is what the WinMerge FAQs say:

Can I hide similar lines in a file comparison, so that only different lines are visible?
No, you can’t. Many users have requested this feature but we don’t have any plans to implement it. We don’t believe it would really improve usability.

There is another free app called DiffMerge that does have this feature though. The two documents that I’m comparing in the screenshot above with DiffMerge are 50 lines in total, but only the different lines are shown.

One thing to note is that the option to view only the differences will be disabled until you switch to the bottom tab labeled Referenced View. After you do that you should be able to switch to the Differences Only view.

I really wish that WinMerge had this feature, but at least there is a free alternative available that can do it. And here are some of the other features that DiffMerge offers:

  • Graphically shows the changes between two files. Includes intra-line highlighting and full support for editing.
  • Graphically shows the changes between 3 files. Allows automatic merging (when safe to do so) and full control over editing the resulting file.
  • Performs a side-by-side comparison of 2 folders, showing which files are only present in one file or the other, as well as file pairs which are identical or different.
  • Windows Explorer Integration – Right-click on any two files in Windows Explorer to diff them immediately.
  • Rulesets and options provide for customized appearance and behavior.
  • Identical feature set on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

I’m an undeniable fan of Grooveshark and have gotten quite a few people hooked on their free web-based interface for listening to their favorite tunes. Not everyone likes to stream music though, and that’s when they turn to the free GrooveDown app to provide search and download capabilities powered by Grooveshark’s vast library.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen an application like this become available, but there are some really unique features that set it apart from the others. For starters you can download songs in bulk by creating a download list, which you can then start the transfer at anytime you want. This is an excellent way for those of you that want to queue up a bunch of downloads and just have them run overnight.

If your music listening tastes tend to run down the popular course there is also an option in the Tools menu you’ll want to take a peek at. From there you can have the search list display the top 500 songs on Grooveshark, and in just a few clicks you can be downloading all of them.

GrooveDown claims that it is legal to download songs from Grooveshark, but I’m sure plenty of people will disagree.

Moments ago, Mozilla stripped the release candidate moniker from Firefox 4 Mobile and pronounced it fit for public release. If you have a Nokia N900 phone, or a fairly-modern Android 2.0-or-later device, go ahead and install it from the Market, by using scanning the QR code after the break, or by visiting Firefox.com/m.

Accompanying the release is the launch of Spark, a cute social game that’s designed to fuel the adoption of Firefox 4 Mobile, much like last week’s use of Glow and Twitter Party during Firefox 4 PC’s release.

While the browser still feels a little rough around the edges, it’s definitely worth trying out if you’re still using Android’s stock browser. Its JavaScript performance is significantly better than any other Android browser, and if you use Firefox on your PC, its built-in Sync functionality is awesome.

Over the next few days we’ll have plenty of tips and tricks for Firefox 4 Mobile, and a list of the best add-ons available for the new browser.

Microsoft has managed to reach this impressive target in just four and a half months, faster than both Apple’s iOS App Store and Google’s Android Market managed, adding about 1,000 apps a week to its armory since the New Year.

While WP7 is still waiting for Microsoft to get its act together on its ‘NoDo’ update, let’s hope developers continue to pile in, and can produce another 10k apps in quick succession. No one can deny, Microsoft has done a few things right with WP7, and more competition in the space can only be a good thing.

But if you’re just learning to touch-type (or have recently switched to a superior layout), Z-Type might prove a nice way to practice your typing skills while having a bit of fun.

It’s a basic shooter game: Spaceships come at you from the top, and you need to shoot and destroy them before they hit the bottom and destroy you. You do the shooting by typing the words associated with the baddies: Each spaceship has one word, and every letter sends a shot aimed at it. Once you finish typing the word, the ship explodes.

The graphics are very nice, and when you’re done with the game it shows you your score and accuracy. The only thing I didn’t like about this game is that it wouldn’t let me set the speed, and it seems to be aimed at novice typists. If I could just select the level of difficulty before starting to play, I suspect it would have been much more engaging.

Still, for novice typists it’s a great little way to practice!

Until today, it was called “Instapaper for Chrome,” but because it’s the work of an independent developer, Instapaper forced a name change to make it clear that this web app is unofficial. The name Instachrome was already taken by a similar extension, so Chromapaper it is.

Chromapaper has one feature that competing Instapaper extensions don’t: offline reading in the browser. Instapaper can be used for simple bookmarking, but saving articles to read when you’re not connected is its real strong suit, and Chromapaper is the first web app to bring that feature to Google Chrome. Just click the “offline sync” button to cache your saved Instapaper articles. When you’re offline, fire up the Chromapaper app from your Chrome dashboard, and your articles will all be there.

Chromapaper doesn’t add a toolbar icon, unforunately, so you’ll have to use the old, reliable Instapaper bookmarklet to save articles.
