iPhone OS 3.1 Software Update Released

Apple announced the iPhone OS 3.1 software update, a free update to iPhone OS 3.0 users. The update will be made available today through the iTunes store.

It’s a slim update though, adding support for ringtones and Genius technology. 30,000 ringtones will be available from the four major labels, selling for $1.29 per ringtone. A ringtone can be set as your default ringtone, or you can add it to a specific number in your contact list.

The new Genius technology aims to make it easier to find applications you’re interested in, based on the applications you and others have already purchased. However, what the App Store really needs is a way to better decide which apps are delivering the goods as promised.
